Coyote
Canis latrans
-These intelligent canines have strong senses of smell, hearing, and sight
-Strong senses aid them in being avid scavengers, eating primarily rabbits and rodents
-They also eat: lizards, snakes, carrion, fruits and vegetables
-Found across the U.S. (not in Hawaii) and in Mexico, Central America, and Canada
-These clever canines often take over dens of other animals and create series of escape tunnels
-The opportunistic natures of these animals allows them to adapt and survive in rapidly changing environments
-Mating Season: February through April
-Offspring: 1-19 (usually 6) pups in a den
HERE AT ALAMEDA:
We have 1 male and 1 female coyote! If you look closely, you may be able to identify some tunnels coming off their den on the northern side of their exhibit (close to the water bowl on the hill).
