Western Screech Owl
Megascops kennicottii
-These birds can be found in coastal forests along Alaska and the Pacific Northwest all the way down to cactus groves in the Arizona desert. They are also found in suburban areas.
-Diets for these small owls consists mostly of small mammals and large insects, though the diets vary with habitat and region
-Feeding happens at dusk and at night, either by swooping off branches or catching insects in the air
-As part of the courtship, males bring food to females
-Nests are made in cavities, either in trees, cacti, or wooden poles. They have also been known to use old magpie nests.
-Offspring: 2-5 white eggs are incubated by the female while the male brings food for the female during this incubation period.
HERE AT ALAMEDA:
We have a male, named BoBo . You may just hear his soft hoots if you listen closely. He loves to talk once you call his name in a soft high pitch BOBO. He is very personable.
