East African Grey Crowned Crane
Balearica regulorum gibbericeps
-This grey crowned crane can be found in the central and northern regions of Africa (Congo, Uganda, Kenya, northern Zimbabwe, and northern Mozambique)
-Having an exceptional mating dance, the cranes prance and strut around one another in circles while bobbing and bowing
-These birds feed on grasses, seeds, grains, insects, groundnuts, and small invertebrates and vertebrates, including aquatic animals
-Mating Season: Peaks during wetter seasons and in drier regions, occurs mainly during the rainsy periods of October-April
-Offspring: clutches of 2-4 very light, bluish-teal eggs

What you may hear when you reach this part of our zoo is a loud, honking sound which is a characteristic call of this grey crowned crane. Having an exceptionally long windpipe enables these birds to produce a powerful trombone-like call to their mates.
