Red Fox
Vulpes vulpes
-These small canines have large, pointed ears that help them hear rodents digging underground
-Rodents (like rabbits) are their preferred meals
-They also like to eat other small mammals, birds, amphibians and fruit, or stolen food from garbage cans in rural areas
-Their ability to always find food, even during winter months, is one reason why this fox is known for being cunning and smart
-They are found across the U.S. from Alaska to Florida and in Canada as well (except for the far north)
-The smallest population is right here in the southwest
-Mating Season: Dec.-Jan. in south and central regions; Feb.-Apr. in northern regions
- Offspring: 2-12 pups in a den
HERE AT ALAMEDA:
The fox you see is a female, named 'Zoey'. You may find her head popping out of a hole in the ground leading to a burrow she’s dug or on a ledge above her door.
