Horsefield's Tortoise
Testudo horsefieldii
The Horsefield's Tortoise is the only 4 toed species in its family.
Even as an adult, this species does not get larger than 9 inches long.
This species originates from the Middle East, but has been bread in captivity for a long time for pets.
This species hibernates for most of the year in a burrow. It will typically be active in the spring.
Females can lay up to 6 eggs that incubate for up to 110 days. These babies will wait till the weather is suitable to leave the nest.
Threats to this species include human consumption, pet trade, and livestock competition for grazing grass.
HERE AT ALAMEDA:
Our Horsefield's Tortoise was donated to us by a local source. We are happy to exhibit him with another tortoise that is not as good as a house pet. They seem close in size now, but the Horsefield's doesn't get much bigger than this.
