Flammulated Owl
Psiloscops flammeus
-Full size of these unique owls is only 6-7 inches in height!
-These owls can be found from southern British Columbia, through most of the western United States, south to the mountainous regions of Mexico and Guatemala (where they spend time during winter months)
-Found in coniferous forests in mid-elevation mountainous regions and higher-elevation oak and aspen forests with brushy undergrowth
-These birds are insectivores, eating a variety of insects such as moths, beetles, and crickets
-Hunting occurs during the twilight hours into the night
-Nests are found in cavities, typically old woodpecker holes
-Offspring: 2-4 cream colored eggs
HERE AT ALAMEDA:
We have a female named ‘Bilbo’. If you listen closely, you may hear her low whoots. She especially makes these sounds when she is hungry. Here at the zoo, she is fed live crickets, dried mealworms, and insectivore pellets.
