Domesticated Hedgehog
There are 16 species of Hedgehog. This species is specially adapted to its desert environment.
It has an excellent sense of smell, and it is very good at digging. Its quills do not insulate heat well, so they can cool off easily during hot days, and it hibernates through cold periods.
This species is nocturnal and can be found hiding among rocks during the day. It sleeps on its side, so the rocks provide an extra protection against predators.
Females give birth to up to 7 young at a time. They are born with their eyes closed, quills beneath their skin, and weigh only 8 grams. After a month, they open their eyes and begin to investigate solid foods.
Threats to the hedgehog include vehicle strikes and pesticides.
